About the Accord:

First introduced in 1976, the Honda Accord is the second longest-running automotive nameplate in Honda’s history, after the Honda Civic. The Accord was the first automobile from a Japanese automaker to be manufactured in America and has been in continuous production at the company’s Marysville, Ohio auto plant since November 1, 1982, using domestic and globally sourced parts. Total global Accord production exceeds 17.5 million units. In 1987, Accord became the first U.S-made automobile from a Japanese automaker to be exported overseas (Accord Sedan to Taiwan).

Accord has also played an important role in advancing low-emissions vehicle technology in America and was the first Honda automobile to meet California’s ULEV, SULEV and SULEV30 emission standards.

The 2018 Accord

The 2018 Accord was the 10th generation of Honda’s perennially best-selling midsize sedan. All new from the ground up, the new Accord is built on a new platform with a lower, wider stance, a lighter and more rigid unibody structure; a lighter and more sophisticated chassis; two advanced new power units, including Accord’s first-ever turbocharged engines, a new 10-speed automatic transmission.

In recreating Accord for its 10th generation, Honda designers and engineers sought to convey “absolute confidence” in every element of design and performance. Building on the bedrock character of Accord – its outstanding quality, fuel efficiency, packaging and sophisticated driving dynamics – they have imbued the 10th-generation Accord with a new level of emotional appeal and premium quality; an Accord that defies its mainstream midsize sedan status, providing even more refined and engaging performance, a more spacious and upscale interior, and the latest generation of advanced Honda safety and driver-assistive technologies.

The Refreshed and Redesigned 2021 Honda Accord:

Sophisticated and Sporty New Exterior Styling

The 2021 Accord gets a refreshed styling with a new front bumper, restyled wider lower and upper grille, for even more sophisticated and sharper looks. The LED high and low beam headlights (2.0L Turbo) blend naturally to the solid wing and upper grille. For the Sports Grades there are Piano black accents added, starting with shark fin antennae, side mirrors, with the rear spoiler complimenting the piano black grille and upper door trims. The 18-inch machine polished wheels (in the sports grades) also continue with the piano black theme, making the 2021 Honda Accord really stand out from the rest. The other grades boast of restyled 17” Alloy Wheels.

Spacious and Luxurious Interior Styling and Features

The Concert Hall Inspired Cabin allows for an uninterrupted view coupled with new advanced and sophisticated features that are convenient and easy to use. The 2021 Accord is now fitted with beige interior from the LX Grade Onwards along with leather in the top grades and black interior options.

Refined, spacious and intuitively designed. The Accord’s cockpit ensures that every feature is positioned just where you need it, to keep the driver in full control always.

The 2021 Accord is now equipped with wireless charging (EX-L Grade Onwards) and 2 new Rear USB ports (Ex Onwards) for easy and quick charging.

The clean and elegantly laid out dashboard presents advanced driving technology in the simplest of ways, placing essential information directly in the line of sight for instant readability such as the Head-Up Display which shows vital information such as speed, directions, incoming calls all in the drivers line of sight.

The new feature is  The Rear Automatic Emergency Brake Assist which uses a sonar based parking sensors, the new system can sense solid objects below 10km/h such as in parking situations, and warn the driver or apply the brakes to help avoid or mitigate a collision. Another additional feature is The Rear Seat Reminder which is a new safety feature available in all grades (except LX) The driver is notified to check the rear seat, when the ignition is turned off.

Powertrain

The 2021 Accord still retains its two direct-injected VTEC Turbo 4-cylinder engines with dual VTC – a 1.5-liter 16-valve inline-4 and a 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC inline-4. Both new turbocharged engines produce peak torque across a broad range of engine speed (RPM), delivering smooth and virtually lag-free power for exceptional throttle response and power delivery in all driving conditions.

The 1.5-L turbo is mated to a Honda continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) with G-Shift Control and produces 198 hp @ 5500rpm and a torque of 260Nm@1600-5000rpm. The new 2.0-L turbo, sharing much of its design with the 2017 Civic Type-R engine, is mated to a smooth, responsive Honda-designed 10-speed automatic with an automatic push button gear selector. It produces 247 HP @ 6500rpm and a torque of 370N-m @1500-3500 rpm.

In the 2.0L Turbo grade the conventional shift lever is replaced with a fully electronic, shift-by-wire gear selector. Park, Neutral and Drive are selected with the push of a button. Reverse is selected by pulling back a dedicated switch. Indicator lights on or next to the buttons indicate the mode selected. Additionally, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifter system lets the driver take manual control of transmission gear selection.

Honda Sensing

The EX-L and 2.0L of the 21YM Honda Accord is equipped with the Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies designed to alert you to things you might miss while driving. It includes:

  • Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS): To help reduce the likelihood of a frontal impact, the Collison Mitigation Braking System helps to bring the car to a stop if the system determines that a collision with a vehicle detected in front or a pedestrian is unavoidable. A warning sounds, and if necessary, brake pressure is automatically applied.
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW): It scans the road ahead to warn drivers of a potential collision and provides visual and audible alerts to prompt the driver to take corrective actions to avoid a potential hazard.
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW): It will detect if the car is straying out of its current lane without the turn signal activated and provides an alert to prompt the driver to make a correction.
  • Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM): Road Departure Mitigation System uses the windscreen-mounted camera to detect whether the car is veering out of its lane. It applies subtle corrections to keep the vehicle in its lane, and in certain situations can also apply braking force and provide a tactile warning.
  • Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS): It helps to keep the car in the middle of the current lane, by detecting road markings with a monocular camera and making small adjustments to steer the vehicle within the lines.
  • Head on Collision System: The Head on Collision System warns drivers of a potential collision with audible and visual warnings. It also uses a tactile warning with autonomous braking as well and vibrates the steering wheel to warn the driver in case he/she is tired.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), allows the driver to set a desired speed and following distance from a vehicle detected ahead, allowing the Accord to adjust its speed automatically for a safe and comfortable journey.
  • Low Speed Follow: The system uses a millimetre wave radar and monocular camera mounted to the windshield to continually track the distance to the detected vehicle ahead and adjusts the Accord’s speed to maintain the set distance. The Low Speed Following function allows the Accord to come to a complete stop, if the vehicle in front slows down and stops. To move off again, simply apply the throttle.

Opel Astra Saloon 1.4T: Still Relevant And Soldiering On

First introduced in 2009 and face-lifted in 2012, the Opel Astra ‘J’ series may have been replaced in European and other markets by a successor model in 2015, but remains in production and soldiers on in some markets, including Jordan. A long-running survivor, the Astra ‘J’ was first developed during the German brand’s General Motors era and continues after its historic ownership change to the Peugeot-led Stellantis (nee PSA) group. But most importantly, a recent test drive reveals just how relevant the sometimes overlooked Astra still is.

Put somewhat on the back burner by General Motors during the twilight years of its long association with the American automotive giant, Opel’s limelight may have been obscured somewhat, but nevertheless continued to do what they have always done best, and make solid, dependable, comfortable and understated yet well-engineered middle of the road mainstream cars. A great example of the Opel ethos, the Astra’s conservative yet contemporary aesthetic is a discreet design that steers clear of ostentatious overstatement, and has aged well in the face of flashier fads and fashions.

Competing in the compact saloon C-segment alongside rivals such as the Volkswagen Jetta, Nissan Sentra, Hyundai Elantra and many others, the Astra ‘J’ design still holds up well with its smooth curvatures, swept back fascia, and long, low arcing roofline. Sitting with a sense of purpose with its subtly bulging bodywork and sculpted character lines, the Astra’ grounded and sporty look is emphasized by a prominent sill crease that rises and blends into the rear wheel-arch, and built-in rear spoiler jutting from the edge of its high-set boot.

Virtually unaltered in visuals since 2012, the Astra ‘J’ has nevertheless gained more powerful downsized engines, and has never driven better for it. Last driven locally many years ago in hatchback guise with an underwhelming naturally-aspirated 1.6-litre engine, the Astra’s current turbocharged direct injection 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine is however much improved with its punchy 138BHP output delivered at a 4,900-6,000rpm plateau. More relevant to daily driving and immediately evident is the Astra’s significantly enhanced and generously confident 148lb/ft torque, available throughout a broad 1,850-4,900rpm range, and peaking at 162lb/ft on temporary overboost.

Gaining an additional 23BHP and 34-48lb/ft, the 1.4-litre Astra makes considerable performance and efficiency improvements including 8.4-second 0-100km/h acceleration, 205km/h top speed and estimated 6.4l/100km combined fuel consumption. Well-suited to its smooth shifting 6-speed automatic gearbox, the front-drive Astra 1.4-litre engine is designed to perform well at relatively low revs. With a broad torque sweet spot that allows for confident on-the move flexibility whether pottering around in town or overtaking on the open road, the Astra meanwhile seamlessly builds up and transitions to its maximum power range by just 4,900rpm.

Quick-spooling with negligibly little of the low-end lag often associated with turbocharged cars being detectible, the Astra’s 1.4T engine comes on boost and pulls with meaningful confidence from early on, set to a subtly percolating and gurgling intake soundtrack, reminiscent of its very powerful Opel GTC OPC (aka Vauxhall GTC VXR) hot hatch coupe sister model. Effortlessly confident from standstill and through revs, the Astra 1.4T proved surprisingly quick for its comparative class, but in true Opel fashion, its ride quality also felt like that of a larger, more expensive car.

A confident and comfortable riding car in the tradition of German cars developed for high speed autobahns, the Astra saloon rides with a planted stability often associated with premium brand cars and more sophisticated suspension than its front MacPherson strut and torsion beam rear set-up. Dispatching lumps and bumps in a settled and forgiving manner during a brief test drive on Amman roads, the Astra also benefitted from right-sized 215/60R16 tyres that well compromise absorption and grip, while retaining better steering feel than wider, more fashionable tyres and wheels.

A refined cruiser with a reassuringly mature ride and meaty ‘twitch-resistant’ steering, the Astra saloon felt like a bigger car, but handled with much of the nimble agility expected of a compact car. Turning in tidily and responsively with a good degree of resilience to under-steer and accurate if not overly nuanced steering, the Astra proved eager and nippy through narrow roads, yet remaining reassuringly committed with good rear grip levels. Though comfortable, the Astra kept cornering lean well in check, and seemed to have good vertical and rebound control.

Quiet and comfortable inside, the Astra has an unostentatiously non-precious near-luxury ambiance inside with good padding, textures, fabrics, solid quality and assembly, and conservatively utilitarian styling. With plenty of user-friendly buttons rather than touch pads, it also has an accommodating and well-adjustable driving position, and a chunky upmarket multi-function steering wheel. Meanwhile, boot space is generous, boot access is adequate, and rear room and sightlines are decent for its segment. Equipment levels cover the most important comfort and safety features including front and side airbags, and electronic stability and traction control.

The system automatically applies the vehicle’s brakes when the airbags deploy after an initial collision, further protecting occupants from additional impacts. Also included are Kia’s Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) and Electronic Stability Control, helping drivers maintain control under braking and cornering.

The bodyshell is comprised of different grades of Advanced High-Strength Steel, maximising rigidity while keeping body weight low to reduce road vibrations and enhance occupant safety in the event of a collision.

The Carnival features a new fully independent suspension system with a multi-skeletal cross-member and new geometry. With this comes the fresh column-mounted motor-driven power steering set-up, resulting in a slightly more direct response to steering inputs, with a 5.6% quicker steering ratio than a hydraulic power steering system.

The new Carnival maintains the same driving character as its predecessors, prioritising comfort above all. The new model delivers an easy-going and assured ride, allowing for stable handling in all conditions. With a comprehensive array of sound-reducing and insulating measures, the new NVH features ensure the new model is one of the quietest and most refined on the road.

The Essence of Z-ness:

Hiroshi Tamura, Chief Product Specialist of the Z Proto

Since 1969, the venerable Fairlady Z has enthralled sports cars enthusiasts the world over. While there have been many iterations of the model through the years, it has constantly maintained its identity as the archetypal Japanese sports car. So, what is the secret to its success? What has made this model so special over the years?

To find out, we looked within, asking Nissan employees what they thought were the qualities that defined the Z, what “Z-ness” meant to them.

Kicking off the series of exploration is Hiroshi Tamura, the Chief Product Specialist (CPS) of the Z Proto and next Z. After graduating from university, he joined Nissan in April 1984, where he spent his early years as an engineer, along with stints at Autech Japan and Nissan Prince Kanagawa sales branches. In February 2006, he received his first CPS assignment—with the Product Planning Department—and in April 2012, he became the CPS of the GT-R and the 370Z, taking on the challenge to not only meet, but exceed fan expectations with both legendary models.

Q&A

Q: Thank you for sharing a moment with us in this very busy time for you. We would like to begin with the basic question of “What is Z-ness?”

Tamura: “Z-ness” to me is the spirit of Nissan. It’s how the car connects to the driver—to the driver’s mind, body and soul—providing the ultimate driving pleasure. It’s where the driver meets machine, resulting in an authentic “oneness” or “bond” between the driver and car. The Z expresses a striking attitude that first attracts you and then entices you to want a lasting relationship. This is truly unique to Z.

Q: When you say “mind, body and soul,” can you expand on how the Z uniquely makes such a connection?

Tamura: Many cars possess good dynamic performance, but the Z makes it easy to enjoy this performance because it creates an emotional relationship with the driver. Like a perfectly suited dance partner, the Z responds to the driver’s impulses as an unspoken connection that is deeply felt.

Also, Z-ness is about enjoying and celebrating life in your own way, whether you’re the type that prefers driving solo on a challenging road or being part of a global community of Z enthusiasts, or “Zenthusiasts”.

Q: What is the Z’s role in the Nissan lineup?

Tamura: As mentioned, Z is the spirit of Nissan, and is especially important now as Nissan is going through its Nissan NEXT transformation. The Z injects excitement into every product in the lineup, which in turn, excites all of us who are associated with the company, including the customers, employees and fans. It’s a car that people know and remember. The Z has a fundamental balance of power and design that’s instantly recognizable as a Nissan, and it’s within reach of many potential buyers, which is very important. It’s a dream car that can be enjoyed by many.

The Z has driven our passion to innovate and challenge the norms through the generations. “Passion, innovation, challenge:” These three words define the Z and remain vital to the company’s DNA, making the Z a strong influence in the culture and personality of Nissan.

Q: Why do you think the Z has had such a strong fan base, going strong for 50-plus years?

Tamura: The Z is timeless, thanks to its style and accessibility. Millions of people share a special connection with the car. Ask your friends or family about the Z, and you get smiles and very positive answers. That is what keeps the Z spirit alive, and it is only getting stronger.

Q: Is that your approach in engineering the new Z?

Tamura: My job, as the Chief Product Specialist, is to be the voice of the customer. Introducing a new Z is a challenging job for the whole team because so many people love the Z for different reasons, such as its appearance, performance, and even positive memories they may have had with the past generations of Z. We must consider the customer’s wants and their happiness first. But it helps that I have loved Z cars since the very beginning, and I have owned them over the years. I know what the Z means to me, so I know what it means to the customer. My intent for the Z has always been to provide a balance between style, power and technology, all of which can be easily accessed by the customer. The Z must move right, look right and be something that produces a smile on the customer’s face.

Q: What is your history with the Z? Are there any standout memories or experiences?

Tamura: I’ve been a Nissan petrol-head since I was a kid. I was a fan of two main cars in my youth—the GT-R and the Z—and it was then (that) I wanted to be a part of the future of Nissan and its sports cars. I remember the GT-R’s power and racing performance, and I remember the beautiful look of the Fairlady Z; these cars changed my life. I have so many happy memories owning and driving the Z and GT-R, and to think that I’m now responsible in creating them leaves me speechless. I will have to write a book about it some day!

Q: You mentioned owning a Z. Which model?

Tamura: The first was the 240ZG “G-nose,” which I bought secondhand and, of course, instantly began tuning in pursuit of its “ultimate performance,” something I still do today. I loved the 240ZG’s appearance, which looked to me like a Shinkansen (bullet train). It had a very sleek aerodynamic body with a shape that sliced the air. It surprised me that a Japanese car company could create such a design, something with a low and wide stance, a long nose, a short rear deck and aggressive bolted over-fenders.

The other Z in my garage was a turbocharged Z31 that I also tuned. The tuning scene was big then and many aftermarket parts were affordable. I learned how to tune my cars through lots of trial and error, learning to pay attention to the details, such as the cooling system, the brake system, and much more. Some lessons I learned the hard way, but in the end, it turned out to be a very nice car.

Q: What are you looking forward to most about the next Z?

Tamura: I want people to drive the next Z and feel like they have discovered a new dance partner. I want customers to smile and enjoy the car, while continuing to spread the Z dream. The next Z will be a car that will keep Nissan’s sports-car spirit alive, and I hope it will help create new, happy memories for the Nissan family, car lovers, and Zenthusiasts everywhere!

New Mercedes C-Class Hits The Compact Exec Scene

The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class: Sedan

This is how inspiring the comfort zone can be

23 February 2021, Dubai, UAE – Welcome to a new, even more digital and efficient world, and welcome home: the new C-Class stands for both, and in all respects creates a future-proof comfort zone in a time of worldwide transformation. As the first classic model series from Mercedes-Benz, the new C-Class is electrified throughout thanks to plug-in hybrids and mild hybrids with 48-volt technology and integrated starter-generator. Due to a high-efficiency battery system, it achieves an electric range of about 100 kilometres (WLTP[1]) as a plug-in hybrid. That is unprecedented in this category to date. It also sets standards with respect to sustainability. And because the C-Class is one of the company’s highest-volume model series, this systematic electrification has a correspondingly strong effect on our carbon footprint. Other technical refinements include optional features such as DIGITAL LIGHT and rear-axle steering. The first units of the new C-Class Sedan are expected to arrive in the region by the second half of the year.

The new C-Class already looks to be in motion at a standstill with its dynamic proportions, thanks to the combination of short front overhang, long wheelbase and rear overhang. The sporty bonnet with power domes accentuates this urge of forward motion. The windscreen and passenger cell have been moved to the rear for these classic proportions known in the industry as “cab-backward design”. The preceding model was already a great step forward in terms of a high-value appeal in the interior, and the new C-Class goes even further with respect to modern luxury. The interior adopts highlights from the new S-Class, adding a sporty touch. Other features producing the sporty, superior appearance include the wide track and the flush 17- to 19-inch wheels in modern designs.

The brand’s hallmark radiator grille characterises the front. All models feature a central star, with the design and character of the radiator grille differing in the details. The base model has a central star and louvres. In the AVANTGARDE line, there are additional decorative elements in the louvres, while the radiator grille and front apron feature chrome surrounds. The distinguishing feature of the AMG Line is the diamond grille with the star design in chrome.

The rear-end design is typical of a Mercedes-Benz sedan. The high-quality design of the tail lamps fascinates with an unmistakable day and night appearance. In the Sedan, the lamps for the first time have a two-piece design in the C-Class, with the light functions divided between the side wall and boot lid lamps. Their precisely configured interiors also showcase the standard of particularly high quality in detail. Optional or line-specific trim in the rear bumper attractively rounds off the rear view. Three new paint finishes – spectral blue, high-tech silver and opalite white – have been added to the colour range.

Interior design: sporty touches thanks to the driver-centred design

The dashboard is divided into an upper and a lower section: into a wing-like section with new, flattened round vents reminiscent of aircraft engine nacelles, and into an opulent expanse of trim. The latter flows from the centre console to the dashboard without interruption. Driver-focus adds to the sportiness: the dashboard and central display are slightly tilted towards the driver by six degrees.

The driver area features a high-resolution LCD screen. It is free-standing and appears to float in front of the wing profile and the expanse of trim. This sets the driver display apart from traditional cockpits with classic round dials. Customers have a choice between a 10.25-inch (26.0 cm) or a 12.3-inch (31.2 cm) version.

The paradigm change to digitisation is also obvious in the central display: the vehicle functions can be controlled using the high-quality touchscreen. Its portrait orientation is particularly advantageous for navigation. The touchscreen likewise appears to float above the expanse of trim. Like the dashboard, the screen is slightly tilted towards the driver. The central display has a screen diagonal of 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) as standard. A larger version measuring 11.9 inches or 30.2 cm is optionally available.

The special design of the optional AVANTGARDE or sport seats of the new C-Class uses layers and enveloping surfaces to create a visual impression of lightness. A dashboard covered with man-made leather and featuring nappa-look beltlines is available for the C-Class (optional equipment, standard with AMG Line). The range of available trim showcases innovative surfaces. These include new interpretations of open-pored veneers in brown tones and a black, open-pored wood veneer featuring fine inlays of genuine aluminium that follow the dashboard’s contours.

Latest generation of MBUX: intuitively operated and learning

Like the new S-Class, the new C-Class is equipped with the second generation of MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience). The vehicle interior becomes even more digital and intelligent, as both the hardware and software have made great strides: Brilliant images on the LCD screens make it easy to control vehicle and comfort functions.

The driver display and media display offer a holistic, aesthetic experience. The information is presented in a clearly structured way. Mercedes-Benz developed a new display aesthetic for the S-Class, which now is systematically used as the basis for other models.

The look of the screens can be individualised with three display styles (Discreet, Sporty, Classic) and three modes (Navigation, Assistance, Service).

  • In “Classic” style, the driver is welcomed with a familiar display environment. The proven display with two tubes and changing content between them provides all the information relevant to the driver.
  • “Sporty” is dominated by the colour red, with dynamic design of the central rev counter.
  • In “Discreet” style, the content is reduced to what is essential. In addition, both screens can be shown in seven colour schemes with the ambient lighting. This makes for an impressive colour experience in the interior.
  • In “Assistance Mode”, the traffic situation is shown in real time supplemented with important display information.

The full-screen navigation was adopted from the S-Class, and gives the driver the best possible guidance on a journey.

Powertrain: systematic electrification of the modern four-cylinder engines

Thanks to systematic electrification and intelligent downsizing, the new C-Class sets new standards in efficiency. The engine range has only four-cylinder units from the current modular FAME (Family of Modular Engines) Mercedes-Benz engine family. Accordingly, the engine range plays a major role in the flexibility of the international production network, with needs-based electrification.

In addition to turbocharging, the petrol engines now have an integrated starter-generator (ISG) for intelligent assistance at low engine speeds as a mild hybrid of the second generation. This ensures outstanding power delivery. The ISG uses a 48 volt on-board electrical system that ensures functions such as gliding, boosting or energy recovery, and makes significant fuel savings possible. The engines also start very rapidly and comfortably as a result, so that the start/stop function is almost as imperceptible to the driver as the transition from gliding with the engine switched off to strong acceleration under engine power. When idling, the intelligent interaction between the ISG and the combustion engine ensures outstandingly smooth running.

Transmission: Automatic now standard across the board

The 9G-TRONIC transmission was developed further for adapting the ISG, and is installed in all C-Class models. The electric motor, power electronics and transmission cooler have now moved into or to the transmission. Previously required lines are eliminated, which offers advantages with regard to installation space and weight. In addition, the efficiency of the transmission has been increased. Amongst other things, the optimised interplay with the electric auxiliary oil pump reduces the delivery rate of the mechanical pump by 30 percent compared with the predecessor – good for efficiency. Furthermore, it uses a new generation of the fully integrated transmission control with multi-core processor and new design and connectivity technology. In addition to the increased computing power, the number of electric interfaces has been drastically reduced, and the weight of the transmission control has been cut by 30 percent compared with the predecessor.

Overview of Sedan models (petrol engines):

Fourth-generation plug-in hybrids will follow soon after the launch. Electrification is taking a great step forward while using the same base engines. With an electric output of 95 kW/(129 hp) and an all-electric range of around 100 kilometres (WLTP), the plug-in hybrid C-Class will operate in all-electric mode in many cases – and on many days without using the combustion engine at all. This is the two-litre variant of the ultra-modern M 254 four-cylinder engine. The complete package is not only very efficient, but also decidedly sporty.

The high-voltage (HV) battery has been developed in-house by Mercedes-Benz AG. It is part of a fourth-generation family of batteries and represents a logical evolution of the previous generation. It consists of 96 cells in a so-called pouch configuration. The battery has a total capacity of 25.4 kWh, thereby bringing about a significant increase in electrical range to around 100 kilometres. To account for the high energy density, the HV battery has an internal cooling system. The thermal management system can therefore control the operating temperature irrespective of the climate control in the vehicle interior. In addition to continuous operation in hot and cold regions, this also allows quick charging with direct current. Even when the battery is completely discharged, it can be fully charged in around 30 minutes using the optional 55 kW DC charger. A standard-fit 11 kW charger (depending on the market) is available for three-phase charging at a Wallbox connected to the domestic AC mains.

The driving experience: considerably more electric

All in all, the driving experience is significantly more electric. In view of the increase in electric range to around 100 kilometres, drivers will be able to cover most everyday journeys under electric power alone. The energy recovery function allows kinetic energy to be recuperated during deceleration or downhill driving, a process that has now also been improved in interaction with the hydraulic brake. The energy recovery output is now over 100 kW. The intelligent, route-based operating strategy activates the electric driving mode where this is most appropriate for the route. It takes into account such factors as navigation data, topography, speed limits and the traffic conditions for the entire planned route. A driver wishing to influence the energy recovery rate can do so directly in three stages controlled by rocker switches behind the steering wheel. This is possible in all driving modes except SPORT. In the driving mode D-, for example, the driver can experience the “one-pedal feeling”: When the driver takes his foot off the accelerator the vehicle slows down purely by electric means, to such an extent that the hydraulic foot brake is often not needed.

The operating strategy communicates with the sensors of the assistance systems and thus efficiently supports the driver in many driving situations. Over longer distances in urban areas, for instance, the car will prioritise electric driving. Two additional driving modes enable the driver to make particularly advantageous use of the plug-in powertrain:

  • BATTERY HOLD: Maintaining the charge state of the high-voltage battery is given priority, e.g. when intending to drive in a city centre or green zone later; selection of the most suitable drive configuration by the hybrid powertrain system, depending on the driving situation and route.
  • ELECTRIC: Electric driving up to 140 km/h, adjustable energy recovery tare in overrun mode, adaptation of Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC for electric driving, activation of the combustion engine using a pressure point of the accelerator pedal (kickdown)

Suspension: comfort and agility

The key components of the new, dynamically configured suspension are a new four-link axle at the front and a multi-link axle at the rear mounted to a subframe. The new suspension provides the basis for a high level of suspension, ride and noise comfort, agile handling and driving fun. The new C-Class is optionally also available with continuously adjustable damping and a sport suspension. Air suspension at the rear is standard for the Sedan model of the plug-in hybrid.

Rear-axle steering: more agile and dynamic

The new C-Class is especially agile and stable with the optional rear-axle steering and the accompanying, more direct steering ratio at the front axle. The steering angle at the rear axle is 2.5 degrees. This reduces the turning circle by 43 centimetres to 10.64 metres.

The driver also needs fewer turns of the steering wheel for full lock. With rear-axle steering, and depending on the drive concept, this requires 2.1 instead of 2.35 turns (rear-wheel drive with comfort steering).

At speeds below 60 km/h, the rear wheels steer in the opposite direction to the front wheels – and by up to 2.5° opposite to the front-axle angle during parking. Depending on the situation, this virtually shortens the wheelbase, and the vehicle is more manoeuvrable, light-footed and agile as a result. At speeds above 60 km/h, the rear wheels steer up to 2.5° in the same direction as the front wheels. This virtual increase in wheelbase has noticeable advantages in the form of improved handling stability and safety at high speeds, during fast lane-changes or sudden evasive manoeuvres.

Crash safety: fit for all global requirements

Together with the familiar PRE-SAFE protection concepts for frontal and rear collisions, PRE-SAFE Impulse Side (available in conjunction with the Driving Assistance Package Plus) forms a kind of virtual crumple zone that extends all around the vehicle. As only a limited crumple zone is available in a side impact, PRE-SAFE Impulse Side (availability depending on selected equipment) can move the affected driver or front passenger away from the danger even before the crash as soon as the system detects that a side collision is immediately imminent. For this purpose, air chambers in the side bolsters of the front seat backrest are inflated in fractions of a second.

All in all, the safety concept of the C-Class is based on an intelligently designed body shell with a particularly rigid passenger cell and crash structures that deform in a specific way acting together with seat belts and airbag systems. In an accident, systems such as belt tensioners and airbags can be activated to protect the occupants as the situation demands. With the help of numerous numerical simulations, the vehicle structure was configured to ensure particularly good occupant protection in the event of a crash. In all aspects of the vehicle configuration that are relevant in an accident, the legal requirements were further bolstered by internal testing requirements and test criteria derived from the findings from real-life accident scenarios.

High-tech features: impressive comfort in terms of driving at night, climate control, and seats

The new C-Class is equipped with LED High Performance headlamps as standard. The DIGITAL LIGHT system familiar from the new S-Class is available as an option. This revolutionary headlamp technology allows new functions, e.g. the projection of guide lines or warning symbols onto the road ahead. The AIR-BALANCE Package provides an individual fragrance sensation in the interior. At the touch of a button or by voice command, the holistic “Fit & Healthy” approach of ENERGIZING Comfort provides a tangible experience of the different comfort systems in the S-Class, and features programmes that group them into worlds of experience.

The optional massage function of the front seats has been expanded to cover the entire back area: eight chambers in the backrest ensure an improved deep-tissue effect. A vibrating massage is also possible on the driver’s side, with four motors installed in the seat cushion. Seat heating in the rear is available for the first time in the Sedan models.

At the touch of a button or by voice command, the holistic “Fit & Healthy” approach of ENERGIZING Comfort provides a tangible experience of the different comfort systems in the S-Class, and features programmes that group them into worlds of experience. At the same time, the system creates a matching atmosphere in the interior – for example, invigorating in case of fatigue or relaxing in case of an elevated stress level. The ENERGIZING COACH suggests an appropriate fitness or wellness programme based on vehicle and trip data. It also factors the information about sleep quality and stress level into its intelligent algorithm if the driver has a suitable wearable. In plug-in hybrid models, it offers the “Power Nap” programme, which is useful e.g. when making a stop at a service station or to charge the battery. The programme has three phases – falling asleep, sleeping, waking – and can increase performance and provide new energy.

The AIR-BALANCE Package provides an individual fragrance in the interior – in line with personal preference and mood. Thanks to refreshing ionisation and filtering of the outside and interior air, it also helps to ensure improved air quality and a greater sense of well-being.

Dimensional concept and practical features: more space in the front and rear

With a length of 4751 mm and a width of 1820 mm, the Sedan models is considerably larger than its predecessor. The wheelbase has increased by 25 mm to 2865 mm. Both the front and rear passengers benefit from the increased exterior dimensions.

The good drag coefficient of the preceding model (Sedan: Cd 0.24) has been preserved despite the larger exterior dimensions.

Production: in a global network with digital cutting-edge technologies

The new C-Class will be produced in the Mercedes-Benz Cars plants in Bremen (Germany), Beijing (China) and East London (South Africa). The Bremen plant, the largest private employer in the region with a workforce of more than 12,000, is the lead plant for this model series for the international C-Class production plants, e. g. by offering digital training. In this way, the new C-Class will be flexibly integrated into ongoing series production around the world. Close, digitally supported cooperation between the employees in the global C-Class production network will allow a smooth production start-up in all the plants around the world.

The worldwide production network of Mercedes-Benz Cars provides maximum flexibility. The company is therefore well-positioned in volatile times with changing parameters. The ability to breathe is a major success factor, and to this end new technologies are integrated into production. One example of smart production in Bremen is digital shop floor management, which allows production data to be monitored in real time. The QUALITY LIVE system enables the employees to check the quality of every vehicle in real time on a clearly arranged user interface. QUALITY LIVE and digital shop floor management are part of the MO360 digital production ecosystem of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

From 2022, all Mercedes-Benz Cars and Vans plants will produce on a carbon-neutral basis. Many Mercedes-Benz plants already source their electrical power from renewable energy sources today, and this also applies to Bremen.

23 February 2021, Dubai, UAE – Kia Corporation has today revealed the first official images of the K8, the first model for the rebirth of Kia brand to exemplify its new purpose and ambitions for the future.

The K8 represents a new model name for Kia and is the first model to show the brand’s new design identity as well as the contemporary new Kia logo.

With a focus on modern, premium quality and dynamic performance, the K8 moves forward in the sports sedan space and will build on the success of the K7(known as Cadenza in some markets) and continues Kia’s rise towards excellence in the segment later this year.

The K8 features a modern innovative sedan that combines sportiness and performance with a progressive and sleek exterior design.

“Following our recent company rebrand, we keep moving toward our new brand values with a new model – the K8. This modern sedan has been designed with innovation and elegance at its very core,” said Karim Habib, Senior Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Center. “While paying homage to the K7, the K8 looks to the future. Its progressive exterior takes on character and emotion, and combines those qualities with an expressive looking front and a dynamic swooping rear, giving the K8 a high-quality, premium presence that takes direct inspiration from some of the world’s most technically advanced yachts.”

Exterior design: embodying an exciting new future

Taking on an all-new name and the first model to be launched following Kia’s recent rebrand, the K8 has been designed with the future in mind.

At the front sits a new signature frameless ‘tiger nose’ grille that gives the K8 presence and authority. The frameless grille, which is integrated within the front bumper to give a clean yet expansive look, features an intricate diamond lattice designed to express the movement of light. The front lamps include a turn signal that resembles a star could.

Symbolically pointing the way forward – and sitting proudly at the very front of the K8, just above the reimagined ‘tiger nose’ grille – is Kia’s contemporary new logo that expresses ‘symmetry’, ‘rhythm’ and ‘rising’ elements, embodying Kia’s confidence and renewed commitment to customers.

The elongated K8 (5,015mm) features a sporty side profile with a dynamic character line that runs the length of the sedan and takes inspiration from yachts sailing across calm waters. A chrome finish runs along the DLO (Daylight Opening) line and the bottom of the doors, and finishes its journey at the rear lamp – adding confidence and gracefulness to the side of the sports sedan.

Completing the progressive yet elegant front and side profile is a dynamic and muscular rear-end that re-interprets the sedan of today as a modern ‘fastback’ passenger car. Strong, dropping shoulders add to the drama of the K8 at the rear, while a clean tailored spoiler beautifully finishes the sporty, low roofline.

Running below the spoiler lip is a futuristic-looking horizontal taillight that carries across the jewel patterned arrangements from the front and side and connects the K8’s next-generation LED rear light clusters.

The 3D vertical clusters hug the corners of the K8, emphasizing clean, angular lines at the rear and further adding depth and width to the rear of the car.

The Kia’s new logo and first-ever K8 badge sit at the rear just below the horizontal light dash.

All-new car, all-new name

The introduction of an all-new model name – the K8 – is part of Kia’s brand transition and represents the premium space in which the new sports sedan will occupy.

The K8 will offer a comfortable yet high-performance driving experience that will complement the simple, ergonomic ‘first class’ interior. The new model signals an upward journey in design, technology and modernity from the outgoing K7, delivering a class-leading package that redefines the meaning of sports sedan.

Due for market launch later this year, more information on the K8 will be made available to in due course.

Nissan X-Terra SE 4WD: X Marks The Spot

Launched for 2021 in Middle East markets as a rugged and utilitarian mid-size SUV, the Nissan X-Terra rekindles one of the Japanese manufacturer’s most missed and respected nameplates. A thoroughly impressive and off-road ready SUV, the X-Terra is refreshingly unpretentious and authentic in character, yet well-equipped and comfortable in execution. Sold in eastern Asian markets as the Terra since 2018, the Middle East incarnation of this highly capable 7-seat off-roader features slight aesthetic alterations and a single, different, petrol engine and automatic gearbox option.

A larger vehicle than the one it ostensibly replaces after a 6-year hiatus, the new X-Terra is however closer in size to the previous generation Nissan Pathfinder SUV, with which it shares core characteristics including body-on-chassis construction and a longitudinal drive-line layout. Positioned as something of a tougher more off-road oriented complementary alternative to the slightly larger, roomier and road oriented transverse platform unibody modern Pathfinder, the X-Terra could also be seen as a smaller more affordable ‘junior’ alternative to Nissan’s storied full-size Patrol SUV.

Ruggedly authentic

A high-riding SUV with superb 243mm ground clearance, the new X-Terra is to a large extent based on the acclaimed Nissan Navara pick-up truck, albeit modified for SUV service. Similar to European market Navara models and the Navara-based Mercedes-Benz X-Class, the X-Terra retains its tough live-axle rear, but ditches the more commercial vehicle leaf spring rear suspension. Instead, it gains a more sophisticated multi-link coil sprung live-axle set-up, which delivers much improved ride comfort and handling properties, but retains a rugged off-road ability and durability.

As a pick-up based and more off-road biased SUV, the X-Terra is pitched to compete with the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Montero Sport and Ford Everest – where available – and sits off the ground with an inherently commanding stature underlined by its high waistline, rear lights and bonnet line. Statuesque with its prominently ridged bonnet, chunky take on the V-motion grille motif, bulging wheel-arches and muscular body surfacing, the X-Terra also features front and rear skid plates to complete its tough image.

Off-road adventurer

Shorter than the Navara pick-up it is related to, the X-Terra’s proportions include short overhangs to help achieve its enviably generous 32.3° approach and 26.6° departure angles, while its equal width to height ratio lends it an underlying perception of assertiveness, hulking road presence and overt expression of its generous clearance and vertical wheel travel. Little altered over its Asian market Terra sister model, the Middle East X-Terra however features a more complex and vertically-oriented bumper design with a more prominent lower lip skid plate.

Positioned longitudinally and far back behind its wide-spaced chrome grille slats, the X-Terra is powered by Nissan’s familiar naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, mated to a smooth, succinct shifting and more conventional 7-speed torque converter gearbox rather than its Pathfinder stablemate’s continuously variable transmission. Livelier than expected given its substantial 1.9-tonne weight – even in more basic and lighter SE 4WD specification, as driven – the X-Terra however well utilizes its output to best effect with somewhat aggressive gearing, in the absence of a more powerful V6 option.

Effective engineering

Developing 165BHP at 6,000rpm but more biased for torque output – with its ‘under-square’ engine design – at 178lb/ft at 4,000rpm, the X-Terra is responsive from standstill and in urban traffic. Progressive, linear and eager from idling to rev limit, and with moderately high peak output points, the X-Terra nevertheless unleashes much of its torque early in the rev range and across the mid-range. Not exactly a fast car, the X-Terra is however certainly as quick as it need be, with smooth delivery and responsive throttle control.

Confident and capable at speed and even on steep inclines, one however needs to work its gears and rev hard and high to hustle it along at a brisk pace. Estimated to be capable of 0-100km/h in approximately 10.5-seconds and returning estimated 8.77l/100km fuel efficiency, the X-Terra drives the rear wheels under normal conditions, during which it is balanced and committed through corners for a vehicle of its height, weight and size. Meanwhile, a brake-based limited slip system enhances on-road agility and off-road traction.

Grounded composure

Driven in four-wheel-drive mode, the X-Terra makes short work of loose surfaces, while engaging low ratio four-wheel-drive mode further improves off-road ability in more extreme conditions calling for high power crawling pace. Higher specification Titanium and Platinum models meanwhile receive a locking rear differential – in addition other assistance equipment – to keep both wheels turning at the same rate for yet more effortless off-road prowess. Also included is electronic hill descent control, while its suspension design allows for plenty of wheel travel, axle articulation and surface contact.

A more rewarding drive than one would expect for its segment, one becomes accustomed to the X-Terra’s on-road characteristics, limits and nuances in short order once on brisk, open, rural switchbacks, where its tall geared hydraulic assisted steering lightens up and becomes second nature in the subtle but detailed information it relates in terms of road texture, car position and approaching grip limits. Turing in tidily and eagerly, the X-Terra remains committed through corners, with little body lean despite its height and weight.

Committed comfort

Finding a great compromise between road manners, ride comfort and rugged durability, the X-Terra’s sophisticated double wishbone front suspension is fluent and forgiving as it pounces from one corner to the next over poorly paved and winding mountain routes. Its coil sprung rear live axle suspension meanwhile dispatches potholes, bumps, lumps and assorted imperfections with unexpected poise and panache, transmitting discrete feedback but remaining settled and firmly fixed into the tarmac. Settled on rebound from sharp dips and large bumps alike, the X-Terra feels comfortably grounded.

Gripping hard through corners, one can however induce mild yet predictably balanced over-steer with a hint of wheel-spin, but not the axle hop of a leaf spring system. Taking punishing road textures in its stride with is tough high sidewall tyres, the X-Terra meanwhile has a high level of body rigidity, with scant little of the shudders associated with some lesser body-on-frame vehicles. Refined and confident, it is stable and well-insulated on highway, and with an 11.4-meter turning circle, is more maneuverable than its dimensions might suggest.

Unpretentiously pleasant

With its frame sitting high, the X-Terra has a commanding driving position with good long distance visibility, tilt/reach steering adjustability, and supportive, comfortable and ergonomic manually adjustable SE spec fabric seats. But with its bulging bodywork and high waistline, one does have to rely on its big side mirrors, rear sensor and intuition to maneuver in narrow confines. Titanium spec however introduces a reversing camera, while Platinum specs adds a roof rear display, blind spot warning and other assistance systems for added safety and maneuvering confidence.

Well-equipped even in SE trim, the X-Terra is pleasantly sporty, modern, uncomplicated and intuitive inside with good textures and materials, if not pretentious or too precious. Spacious inside, the X-Terra does however give away some cabin practicality to its Pathfinder sister, in terms of second and third row seating. That said, split tilt, slide and tumble second row seats are versatile for comfort, space and access to the smaller third row. Boot space is meanwhile generous, but third row seats don’t fold fully flush with the floor.

– Press Release –

Gordon Murray Automotive reveals the T.50s Niki Lauda with the mission to deliver an on-track experience like no other car in history

All-new T.50s Niki Lauda revealed: designed and engineered to offer “an on track experience like no other car to date.”

  • Production limited to just 25 cars
  • Designed, engineered and developed in parallel with the ground- breaking T.50 supercar
  • Hundreds of components changed to optimise the car for track use
  • Engineered without compromise, weighing just 852kg
  • Powered by a 725bhp naturally aspirated V12 engine which weighs only 162kg and revs to 12,100rpm
  • Named after legendary three-time F1 world champion and Gordon Murray’s former Brabham teammate, Niki Lauda
  • Car unveiled on Niki Lauda’s birthday
  • Offers a unique and highly personalised ownership experience, with each chassis named after one of Gordon Murray’s grand prix victories

Gordon Murray Automotive has unveiled its T.50s Niki Lauda track-focused supercar for the first time. Developed in parallel with the T.50, the most driver-centric supercar ever built, the T.50s Niki Lauda has been conceived, designed and engineered to offer the ultimate on-track driving experience.

Like the T.50, the T.50s Niki Lauda has been designed and engineered without compromise but with an even more extreme specification. It weighs just 852kg and will be powered by a substantially redesigned version of the T.50’s Cosworth-engineered 3.9-litre V12, producing 725bhp, revving to 12,100rpm and going through a newly- designed Xtrac six-speed paddle-shift gearbox. Advanced aerodynamics, aided by a 400mm rear-mounted fan, will produce up to 1500kg of downforce for optimum track performance.

Just 25 T.50s Niki Lauda’s will be made, costing £3.1m (before taxes). Production will start in January 2023 at Gordon Murray Automotive’s Manufacturing centre in Dunsfold, Surrey, UK, after the run of 100 T.50 supercars is completed.

Professor Gordon Murray CBE: “The T.50 is the ultimate road-going supercar, but I always dreamed of taking it one step further… to build a version that will deliver an on- track driving experience like no other car in history.

“When we created the McLaren F1 GTR it was developed from the F1 road car. From its inception the T.50s Niki Lauda, though, was designed in parallel with the T.50. For the

T.50 our target was clear, to make the best driver’s car for the road. With the T.50s Niki Lauda it was equally clear, to make it the best driver’s car for the track. Putting it another way, we asked ourselves what would be the coolest thing to drive on track and create a track driving experience like no other car in history?”

“We had no interest in achieving the ultimate lap time or creating an over-tyred and over-downforced spaceship at the expense of driver involvement, because ultimately you have to possess an F1 driver level of skill and fitness to get the best out of them.”

“Instead, I laid out some parameters to create the ultimate driver’s car and experience on track: a central driving position, a V12 just behind your ear revving to over 12,000rpm, producing over 700 horsepower and with an even faster response time than the T.50, downforce limited to 1500kg and a weight of under 900kg. Plus the ability to turn up at any track, make a few basic checks and have fun, without the need for an entire support crew.

“In my view it doesn’t get better than that and is driving in its purest form. The T.50s Niki Lauda will give a visceral connection between driver, car and track, the like of which has not been experienced to date.

“I can just imagine going round your favourite circuit, sitting in the middle with that unsilenced V12 screaming just behind you – the driving experience will be something special. With a power to weight ratio better than that of a naturally aspirated LMP1 car, it is also going to be searingly quick and, with such a low weight, will change direction like an F1 car.

“With the direction of travel of the automotive industry, it’s hard to imagine that there will ever be another car quite like this. Especially not one with a central driving position, a high revving naturally aspirated V12 engine and that is so lightweight. I believe it will go on to define its era.”

Design

Gordon Murray and the team have worked hard on the T.50s body design to achieve their aerodynamic performance targets, whilst retaining the T.50’s balanced and classic proportions.

The dramatic aerodynamic features of the T.50s Niki Lauda instantly give away its performance potential. A striking central fin designed to enhance stability features a Niki

Lauda logo. At the rear, the distinctive 400mm fan from the T.50 is retained, accompanied by an even larger rear diffuser and a new delta wing. The rear grille features a T.50s badge and ‘Fan Car’ script.

The aerodynamic elements continue at the front of the car. Barge boards are sculpted to improve airflow to the side ducts, which house the oil cooling systems for the engine and transmission. A splitter and dive planes are also prominent and further reflect the car’s aero-influenced design. At the same time, the purity of the T.50 is not lost, creating a purposeful yet elegant look.

Owners will be able to individualise their T.50s through their choice of colours and liveries, so that no two cars will be alike.

Professor Gordon Murray CBE: “The styling of the T.50s is completely aero driven, but still attractive. There’s not one body panel carried over from the T.50, but the road car has such a strong and classic shape that it still manages to shine through.”

Engine and transmission

The Cosworth-designed 3.9-litre V12 engine is a dramatically different version of the engine that powers the T.50. It is even more powerful and faster-revving too, delivering 711PS at 11,500rpm, on its way to a 12,100rpm rev-limit. At 178hp/litre, the specific power output of the T.50s Niki Lauda’s V12 exceeds that of the all-conquering Cosworth DFV Formula One engine. The power-to-weight ratio of 835PS/tonne betters that of a naturally aspirated LMP1 car.

The T.50s Niki Lauda’s engine is fed by a newly-designed, roof-mounted, high- performance RAM induction airbox (which can increase maximum power to 725bhp). The maximum torque figure is 485Nm, produced at 9,000rpm. A newly-developed, bespoke, straight-through exhaust system also takes the engine sound to a new level. Right through the rev-range it promises to be one of the greatest and most characterful sounding cars ever made.

The state of the art V12 pushes the boundaries of engine design even further, with many new components. Changes include completely revised cylinder heads and camshafts, plus a higher compression ratio of 15:1.

Through meticulous attention to detail, this new iteration of the Cosworth GMA V12 weighs just 162kg, 16kg less than what was already the lightest road-going V12 engine ever. The weight-saving measures extend to the intake, exhaust and control systems, as well as the engine itself. All the valves are made from titanium, while there is no variable valve timing due to the additional weight of the geartrain and electronic control system.

A simpler induction system features 12 throttle bodies on top of the engine, fed directly by the racing-style air box. The exhaust system does without catalytic converters, has

thinner Inconel walls and, with only track noise limits to meet, benefits from smaller silencers.

A bespoke Xtrac IGS (Instantaneous Gearshift) six-speed paddle shift gearbox is fitted, designed to fit the exacting packaging and weight demands of the T.50s. As part of Xtrac’s efforts to minimise weight wherever possible, even the gears are lighter, contributing to a 5kg total weight reduction. Both the gearbox and the clutch are electronically actuated.

Ratios have been chosen to optimise on-track performance and driver enjoyment and engagement, delivering a top speed of approximately 200-210mph. A set of closer ratios optimised for shorter circuits will also be offered, allowing owners to make the most of all six gears via the steering column-mounted paddles. In this configuration, the T.50s Niki Lauda will reach around 170mph flat-out.

Chassis, body and suspension

The T.50s Niki Lauda is built around a specially developed, lightweight carbon fibre monocoque. Optimised for weight reduction and structural rigidity, it is constructed using advanced part-binding technology, with carbon fibre wrapped around a honeycomb aluminium core.

This stiffness and strength also contributes to the T.50s’s exceptional occupant safety, with precisely engineered deformable areas. Passengers are further protected by an F1- style ‘passenger safety cell’.

Exterior body panels, all unique to the T.50s, are also made from ultra-lightweight carbon fibre. Windows and screens use glazing that has been further reduced in weight from the road car specification.

For exceptional levels of confidence inspiring on-track dynamics, the T.50s Niki Lauda utilises the same forged aluminium front and rear double wishbone suspension system as the T.50. However, the springs, dampers and anti-roll bar have been respecified to optimise track performance, while the ride height has been lowered to 87mm at the front and 116mm at the rear.

As part of the Trackspeed package, the T.50s Niki Lauda’s chassis can be adjusted to find the ideal setup for its owner. Both the chassis settings and the aerodynamics are fully adjustable.

Steering

The T.50s Niki Lauda retains the T.50’s rack and pinion steering, but with a revised steering ratio.

Brakes

The Brembo carbon ceramic discs of the T.50 are carried over to the T.50s Niki Lauda (370mm x 34mm front/340mm x 34mm rear), with six-piston front callipers and four- piston rear callipers. The braking system and aerodynamics combine to produce incredible deceleration of 3.5G. To ensure the brakes maintain their phenomenal performance throughout a track session, new ducting around each wheel is designed to improve brake cooling.

Wheels and tyres

The T.50s sits on unique and exceptionally light magnesium forged 18-inch wheels, weighing less than 6kg each, with Formula One-style lightweight wheel hubs and a centre lock attachment. The wheels are wrapped in Michelin slick tyres, measuring 250mm wide at the front (25/64 18”) and 300mm wide at the rear (30/68 18”). A wet option is also provided.

Aerodynamics

The T.50s Niki Lauda has completely new aero, which combines to create 1500kg of downforce. This includes a new 1,758mm-wide, rear-mounted delta wing, the design of which was inspired by the front wing on Murray’s 1983 Brabham BT52 Formula One car and is just as effective today as it was then.

The front of the T.50s features a splitter with a central aerofoil section, which generates huge load figures to balance out those from the rear wing. The splitter’s central channel reduces the car’s sensitivity to pitch while allowing airflow under the car to continue to drive the central diffuser section, keeping the efficiency of the entire aero package high. Dive planes include horizontal elements paired with a vertical duct to manage wheel arch pressures and tyre wake, reducing drag and improving efficiency. A pair of NACA ducts have been perfectly positioned on the front clam shell in a region of high pressure and where the thin boundary layer is ideal for cooling the large front brakes.

A central fin stretching from the top of the roof to the rear lip of the car has also been added for increased yaw stability. The large vertical face is presented to the airflow during high-speed cornering and helps counteract the momentum of the car towards the outside of the corner.

To further improve airflow and accommodate the central fin, the oil cooling systems for the engine and transmission are now located in side ducts. By placing these systems lower in the car, this helps to optimise its centre of gravity.

With the powertrain coolers located directly downstream of the front wheels, barge boards have been added to manage the turbulent wake emanating from the front wheel arches, ensuring a clean flow of air to the side ducts.

The T.50s Niki Lauda retains the same 400mm ground-effect fan as the T.50, but here it runs in a single High Downforce mode, spinning at 7000rpm. The T.50s also has much simpler ducting, with a permanently open duct running down to the redesigned rear diffuser.

Like the chassis, the T.50s Niki Lauda’s aerodynamics can be adjusted to suit its owner’s preferences, adding or removing downforce as required. To balance the car’s aero, the front diffusers are adjustable, as is a slotted flap on the rear wing. The high- speed balance can be further honed through changes to the car’s ride height.

In the optimum configuration, when a particular race circuit demands it, up to 1500kg of downforce will be achievable. However, the car’s aerodynamics have been carefully designed to ensure that the T.50s Niki Lauda’s performance remains accessible and exploitable regardless of the driver’s experience.

Professor Gordon Murray CBE: “When we first ran the CFD we were already ahead of our downforce target. At one point we were achieving 1,900kg of downforce, but we backed it off to 1,500kg to make the car more manageable for the owners.”

Interior

The dihedral doors lift to reveal a race-car oriented cabin. The T.50s Niki Lauda retains the driver-focused central seating position of the T.50, giving the driver an unhindered view of the track ahead and allowing perfect placement. The driver sits on a full racing carbon fibre seat with fore and aft adjustment, and is secured with a six-point harness.

The T.50s is a two-seater with a fixed passenger seat to the left of the driver, complete with a four-point harness. In place of the seat on the right is a fire extinguisher system. Occupying the space formerly taken up by the passenger footwell is a vertical switch gear panel similar to that found on the legendary McLaren F1 GTR. Should the owner wish, the car can be ordered without a passenger seat to save further weight and create an even more focused feel.

The rectangular carbon fibre steering wheel is a lesson in simplicity, featuring only the key controls that the driver needs. This includes buttons for the traction and launch control, as well as the car-to-pit/driver-to-passenger radio and to select neutral. The slim, uncluttered design is influenced by Murray’s racing experience.

Professor Gordon Murray CBE: “I used to make my drivers take their watches off, partly for weight, but also because it adds to the steering inertia. Big wheels with lots of switches are quite heavy from a steering inertia point of view, so for the T.50s I wanted to keep the wheel small, clean and simple.”

To avoid unnecessary distractions, the T.50s features a single digital screen. This displays essential vehicle and engine data, as well as aero info, the gearchange

indicator, telemetry, lap time, tyre pressures/temperatures, G-forces and a camera video feed.

Driver comfort was another priority for Murray when designing the T.50s, which maintains the same spaciousness and visibility as the road car. This makes the T.50s Niki Lauda a uniquely usable track car, despite its incredible performance.

Professor Gordon Murray CBE: “Engineering the ultimate track-focused supercar has to start with the driver. It was essential that we retained a central driving position, with every control arranged within easy reach and with no distractions or unnecessary information on display. And in my opinion, you don’t get a better view than that from the central driving position and one which allows you to place the T.50s Niki Lauda with millimetre precision on any circuit. You are left with nothing to take away the pure pleasure of pushing this car as hard as you can on your favourite race circuit.”

“Racing drivers are often uncomfortable, they just put up with it because they’re trying to win a race. The McLaren F1 had a really nice driving position and good visibility and I think that helped the guys at Le Mans because it made it more comfortable for them. In the T.50s, the driving position ergonomically is just about as good as it gets. This is a car you can drive all day.”

Named after a racing legend

The T.50s Niki Lauda has been named after legendary three-time Formula One World Champion, Niki Lauda.

Professor Gordon Murray CBE: “The T.50s is named in honour of Niki to commemorate his famous win with the Brabham BT46B fan car in the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix. Niki was a great racing driver and he was also a good friend and it is absolutely fitting that we are launching the T.50s Niki Lauda on his birthday. Niki would have appreciated the innovation and engineering detail in our car.”

The Lauda family said: “We are proud that Gordon Murray Automotive has named its new car after Niki. He would have been extremely honoured to have been associated with a car designed and engineered by Gordon, with whom he had such a long association and friendship.”

Each chassis to be named after one of Gordon Murray’s F1 race wins

Additionally, each of the 25 cars’ chassis will be individually named after one of Gordon Murray’s grand prix wins on different circuits. The first car will be designated Kyalami 1974 and further cars will be named after the 24 subsequent wins, in chronological order. Each car will also come with a specially commissioned book about the race that it is named after, with Murray’s view and memories of the victory.

Professor Gordon Murray CBE: “Each car will carry its own individual story, being forever linked to the grand prix victory it is named after. The T.50s is inspired by my love of motorsport, so it seemed entirely fitting to create this special connection to iconic races from the past.”

Customer experience

T.50s Niki Lauda buyers will receive a bespoke and personalised service, from the first expression of interest, through the specification, manufacturing and handover periods, as well as throughout the entire duration of their ownership.

Each of the 25 individually specified cars will be unique, both in terms of setup and in the choice of colours and liveries.

A Trackspeed package will also be included which comprises both engineering support and all the equipment needed to run the car at a track, including a full set of pit tools and refuelling equipment.

Customers will be invited to a track day to have both chassis and aerodynamics set-up for them to suit their driving style and experience. Owners will also benefit from a day’s on-track tuition in the T.50s Niki Lauda to enable them to get the most from their car, and there will be a day’s tuition for the owner’s nominated technician to help them prepare the car for track driving days.

Additionally, there will be ongoing engineering support to allow owners to run their car at events and track days around the world. Gordon Murray Automotive is planning its own special events for T.50s Niki Lauda owners in future.

Gordon Murray Automotive are working closely with Stefan Ratel and his SRO organisation towards creating a GT1 sports club, which will provide exclusive track days aligned with the GT World Challenge Europe events on some of Europe’s most prestigious circuits. This is a first step with a view to creating a future supercar race series.

Professor Gordon Murray CBE: “It was essential to me that the T.50s Niki Lauda is easy to live with and enjoy. You will own the car, you will be completely in control of where and when you enjoy it. My vision is that owners will take it to a circuit, check the tyre pressures, climb in, fire it up and have fun. That’s the way it should be.”

GM Mid East Plots Two-Pronged Path, Announces Bolt EUV

– Press Release –

GM Middle East Defines 2021 Regional Strategy; Headlined by Reveal of the all-new, all-electric Chevrolet Bolt EUV

  • An ambidextrous approach to mobility will see General Motors continue to grow its core business, while pioneering the future of mobility
  • Chevrolet Bolt EUV will arrive in the Middle East later in 2021, the first Electric Utility Vehicle (EUV) from Chevrolet and GM
  • Following a slew of successful business results, General Motors Middle East celebrates the start of 2021 with the 2 millionth vehicle sale since 2000

15 February, Dubai, UAE Today, General Motors (GM) Middle East has outlined its 2021 and beyond regional business and growth strategy, further reinforcing the Middle East as a critical piece of GM’s past, present and future in leading towards its current and future mobility goals.

GM continues to revolutionize the industry by changing the face of mobility, as the company drives towards its vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion, while continuing to grow its Truck and SUVs franchises.

GM Middle East will be focused on two distinct strategic business pillars: growing and expanding its core business of delivering world-class cars, trucks and SUVs, while accelerating its future mobility agenda across electrification, autonomy and connectivity.

GM Middle East’s 2021 Future Mobility strategy is today headlined by the all-new, all electric Chevrolet Bolt EUV.

Through this ambidextrous approach to today and tomorrow’s mobility solutions, GM will drive its regional Enterprise Growth Strategy, reinforcing leadership in strategic truck and SUV segments, while innovating fearlessly to future-proof the business. With the introduction of world-class technologies such the diverse all-electric portfolio and by re-imagining the customer experience in and outside of the vehicle, GM aims to lead the automotive industry.

“We have been in this region for 90 years and plan to be leaders for  the next 90 years to come,” said Luay Al Shurafa, President and Managing Director, General Motors Africa and Middle East. “GM is flexing its size, scale and expertise like never before, both globally and right here in the region. We already hold a winning position in our core business which has always been to build outstanding vehicles that resonate with our customers. The opportunity for us, as we look towards the future, is to translate this success into electric vehicles, too. With the reveal of the Chevrolet Bolt EUV, we are taking another step toward achieving this.”

“While we are focused on growing our core business, we are keenly building for the future. The Bolt EUV builds on other recent announcements including the GMC HUMMER EV Super Truck launching in the region next year, and that our pioneering connectivity and safety brand, OnStar, will launch here very soon – and be available across our Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC brands. This is game-changing technology,” said Al Shurafa.

The all-new, all-electric Chevrolet Bolt EUV confirmed for Middle East

In December 2020, GM announced a $27B investment in autonomous and electric vehicles as well as a plan to launch 30 new EVs globally by 2025. Just weeks later, GM delivers on that promise in the Middle East with the all-new Chevrolet Bolt EUV. The first all-electric SUV from Chevrolet, the Bolt EUV adds a new dynamic to the brand’s award-winning line-up, building on what customers loved about the Bolt EV but packaged with SUV-like proportions.

Propelled by the proven battery technology that has democratized electric vehicles, the Bolt EUV boasts a range of 402 KM1, meaning it only needs to be recharged about as often as a petrol car needs to re-fuel. The integration of these battery advancements demonstrates how the Bolt EUV and all future EVs from GM will be a viable everyday vehicle.

“As we celebrate our strong SUV line-up this year, we are delighted to welcome our first Electric Utility Vehicle to our regional portfolio,” said Kelly MacDonald, Chief Marketing Officer General Motors Africa and Middle East. “We continue to see high consumer demand for SUVs in the Middle East and as a pioneer in this space, the natural step for us was to bring an electric SUV to the region. GM is planning for an all-electric future and we want everybody in. With the all-new Chevrolet Bolt EUV, we have unlocked a new offering, ensuring we provide an EV suitable for all people and all lifestyles.”

The core offering will remain a priority throughout 2021

GM has a long and successful history of launching world-beating vehicles and will continue to invest in key performing sectors in 2021. Currently, in the compact SUV segment, GM holds spots in the top five across the three biggest markets – the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait – driven by key launches such as the Chevrolet Captiva which has broken records within GM, at 171% growth.

Already number one in Saudi Arabia in the full-size SUV segment, GM has bolstered its position regionwide with the launch of the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade. Just 60 days after launch the sales figures are strong with demand for all three vehicles outstripping supply. Built with more regional feedback than ever before, including the decision to build the Z71 trim for the Chevrolet Tahoe and the AT4 trim for the GMC Yukon as standalone models, these full-size SUVs are attracting a younger demographic to the brands.

“We have demonstrated that we know how to win in this segment, and we are uniquely positioned to build on this success in 2021 with the strong portfolio we have across Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac,” said Sajed Sbeih, Managing Director for Commercial Operations Africa and Middle East. “Despite market headwinds caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we maintain a strong commercial position and, in fact, have just celebrated our 2 millionth sale since 2000, a milestone we are particularly proud of. Fittingly, the 2 millionth sale was of the Chevrolet Captiva, one of our most successful SUVs in 2020. We will continue to listen to our customers and bring vehicles to market that suit their needs both for today, tomorrow and beyond.”

Re-imagining the in-vehicle customer experience

Over the last century, GM has been an innovator across the automotive industry, transforming how the world moved. By actively working across all key pillars of future mobility – autonomous, electric and connectivity – GM has the ambition, the talent and the technology to redefine mobility and solve societal challenges.

Building on the announcement of the Chevrolet Bolt EUV, GM also announced that its pioneering in-vehicle safety and security technology, OnStar, will launch in select GCC markets soon. Built into most Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac vehicles, GM is leading the way with the Connected Car, ensuring that customers are driving a vehicle that can protect them from danger and connect them to the world. Through quality and tech advancements backed by human interaction, OnStar subscribers will elevate their ownership experience and be able to plan for peace of mind, and for certainty.

Gary D. West, Managing Director, OnStar Middle East Operations and Future Mobility, General Motors Africa and Middle East said “The convergence of all-electric propulsion and cutting-edge in-vehicle connectivity, is a testament to how we are working to make our vision of a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion a reality, not just in the US but right here in the Middle East too. With over 20 years’ experience in delivering Connected Car Services, GM is re-imagining the customer experience both in-vehicle and out.”

With a clear directive for 2021, GM will continue to invest and grow their core petrol-powered offering while strengthening the foundations for the next wave of technology. As the industry faces a crucial inflection point, GM has the will, the skill and the scale to transform the face of mobility.

15 February 2021, DUBAI, UAE  With a reputation for toughness and a proven track record of 44 consecutive years as America’s favorite truck, the Ford F-series lineup has continually raised the standards expected of all light duty trucks. And the all-new F-150 – launched in the Middle East today – is purpose-built to be the toughest, most productive F-150 ever.

The all-new F-150 raises the standard for all light-duty trucks. It boasts best-in-class towing and payload capability, introduces all-new features to increase customer productivity, and an available all-new 3.5-litre PowerBoost hybrid powertrain with Pro Power Onboard – an integrated power generator.

“We see it as our duty to deliver not just what our customers want and need, but what they might have never thought possible,” said Pedro Simoes, Middle East Marketing Director, Ford Direct Markets. “The F-150 is tougher than ever, packed with more advanced technology, and loaded with features that encourage owners to get out and enjoy their trucks more.”

Toughest F-150 ever
The all-new F-150 starts with a durable, proven foundation – a fully boxed high-strength steel frame with a high-strength, military-grade, aluminium alloy body. Every panel of the distinctive, rugged exterior is redesigned while maintaining its bold and tough signature look, including an updated headlamp design, new power dome hood and wrap-around bumpers. Higher front fenders, a tucked-in midsection and larger-diameter tyres pulled out three-quarters of an inch create a stronger, more powerful stance on and off the road.

There are nine grille options available across the series lineup, all differentiated in their design and all unmistakably F-150, plus new tailgate appliqués. Functional upgrades throughout include available LED headlamps and taillamps, and available full-length extended power running boards with kick switch that provide better truck-side cargo box accessibility.

The all-new F-150 is also the most aerodynamic ever. New active grille shutters and new cab and tailgate geometry all work together to reduce drag and improve fuel consumption on every truck.

The interior is completely redesigned to elevate truck owners’ experience with style, comfort, utility and technology. Featuring enhanced materials, new color choices and more storage, it is built around the functional needs of truck customers. Every surface has been thoughtfully designed, such as more soil-resistant two-tone seats for XL or the new standard dual glovebox.

F-150 introduces an all-new 12-inch centre screen – standard on XLT high series and above – that allows customers to split the screen and control multiple functions simultaneously, including navigation, music or truck features. The landscape design strikes a balance between demands for technology accessibility and the greater convenience of physical buttons. An 8-inch touch screen, standard on XL and XLT standard and mid-series trucks, means every customer gets touch screen functionality and better rearview camera vision. Both screens feature access to the new digital owner’s manual, which can help all customers find the information they need more easily.

An available new 12-inch digital gauge cluster features a large information-on-demand area, along with truck-specific graphics and animations that respond to the all-new F-150’s selectable drive modes and can display off-roading data and turn-by-turn navigation.

Most productive F-150 ever
Ford’s deep understanding of truck customers informs new features on the all-new F-150 that help take productivity to the next level.

Creating the ultimate durable, anywhere office, F-150’s new optional Interior Work Surface is ideal for signing documents, working on a laptop or enjoying a meal when parked. It is available in both bench and captain’s chair seating configurations on XL to Limited. Knowing many customers prefer a console shifter, Ford has created a stowable unit for F-150, which easily folds into the centre console with the push of a button and allows full access to the large work surface when in park.

Class-exclusive Max Recline Seats available on Platinum and Limited models provide ultimate comfort during downtime. Max Recline Seats fold flat to nearly 180 degrees, with the bottom cushion rising to meet the back cushion and the upper back support rotating forward up to 10 degrees for maximum comfort.

Available lockable, fold-flat rear storage adds a vault to the F-150 that extends the width of the rear seats. It’s as easy as lifting the bottom cushion of the rear seat, dropping valuables in and locking them away for safe keeping.

Every all-new F-150 comes standard with new cleats mounted to the sides of the tailgate to act as tie-down locations for extra-long items in the bed, while new clamp pockets are built in to the tailgate of every truck. An available flat Tailgate Work Surface also includes integrated rulers, a mobile device holder, cupholder and pencil holder for those who use the F-150 for work or DIY projects around the home.

Customers can keep going into the night with exclusive available Zone Lighting. This allows occupants to turn on and off individual sections of exterior lights through the SYNC 4 screen or remotely with the FordPass app on their phone, so they never have to work, camp or do anything in the dark.

The all-new F-150 is the only light-duty full-size pickup to offer available Trailer Reverse Guidance and Pro Trailer Backup Assist. Trailer Reverse Guidance, made popular on Super Duty, uses the truck’s high-resolution cameras to provide multiple views along with helpful graphics that tell drivers which way to turn the steering wheel while backing up. Pro Trailer Backup Assist, which makes backing up a trailer as easy as turning a dial, continues on F-150.

Powertrain choices for all
The all-new 2021 launches with a choice of four engines – three V6 options, including the segment’s first ever full hybrid powertrain – and a naturally aspirated V8.

The all-new 3.5-litre PowerBoost full-hybrid V6 powertrain is targeted to deliver the most torque and horsepower of any light-duty full-size pickup. Available on every trim level from F-150 XL to Limited, the no-compromise PowerBoost system – the only light-duty full-size pickup to offer a full hybrid – adds instant electric torque to Ford’s 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6. It is targeting an estimated range of approximately 1,100km on a single tank of gasᶧ and will deliver at least 5,400kg of available maximum towing – equivalent to the average weight of ten fully grown dromedary camels.

PowerBoost combines Ford’s proven EcoBoost engine and 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission with a 35-kilowatt (47-horsepower) electric motor integrated into the transmission, as well as software calibrated specially for truck use, including drive modes like tow/haul mode to help customers better manage towing heavy trailers.

The electric motor applies regenerative braking energy capture to help recharge the 1.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. The battery is efficiently packaged underneath the truck, leaving the cab and cargo box of PowerBoost F-150 as spacious for passengers and cargo as other comparably equipped F-150 models. The system is capable of sustained battery usage at extreme outside temperatures or under heavy loads.

Power isn’t only important under the hood. Available Pro Power Onboard expands F-150’s capability by bringing generator levels of exportable power to work sites, camp sites and everyday life. Pro Power Onboard is available on the PowerBoost-equipped F-150, providing 2.3 kilowatts of output to help drive productivity. Power is accessible through in-cabin outlets and up to four cargo bed-mounted outlets, including one 230V three-pin socket for Middle East markets. There’s enough power to run a heavy-duty air compressor, or power your campsite for the evening.

Other engine options include the 3.5-litre EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 engine which produces 400 horsepower and 677 Nm torque, and the naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 engine that develops 400 horsepower and 555 Nm of torque to give it best-in-class payload capabilities.

Most connected F-150 ever
All-new SYNC 4 debuts in the F-150 and is standard across all trim levels, helping keep owners connected and make their days more productive with more natural voice control available as well as customisable information on demand. Press Release

Electric, sporty, and progressive: The Audi e-tron GT

With the e-tron GT (combined electric power consumption in kWh/100 km (62.1 mi): 19.6–18.8 (NEDC), combined CO2 emissions in g/km (g/mi): 0), Audi is demonstrating how fascinating electric mobility will be. The four-door coupé combines emotive design with a powerful drive and dynamic handling. This is the start of a new era, the gran turismo of the future.

It is an Audi such as the world has never seen before: With the e-tron GT, the brand is demonstrating its plans for shaping an emotive and fascinating future of mobility. Presales of two models of the gran turismo with fully electric drive will start simultaneously in February 2021: the e-tron GT quattro and the RS e-tron GT (combined electric power consumption in kWh/100 km (62.1 mi): 20.2–19.3 (NEDC), combined CO2 emissions in g/km (g/mi): 0). Both models are powerful, fast, and dynamic, and both have zero local emissions. The sum of these qualities adds up to a strong character that reinterprets the idea of the gran turismo.

The exterior of the Audi e-tron GT is a dynamic work of art. Each surface and each line is harmonious, from the headlights, which are available with Audi laser light upon request, to the large diffuser at the rear. In combination, the details create a sculpture that looks like it was shaped by the wind. The body line is extremely aerodynamic, and the drag coefficient is just 0.24. The interior also corresponds to that of a classic gran turismo: The driver and front passenger seats are installed in a sporty low position and separated by a wide center console, and the rear seats provide sufficient space even for adults. The progressive elegance of the interior design emphasizes the car’s character.

A gran turismo is a sporty touring car with excellent dynamic handling, a confident glider. The Audi e-tron GT shares this character. Depending on the model, its electric motors output 350 kW (476 PS) or 440 kW (598 PS), thereby allowing dynamic spurts. The range of up to 487 kilometers (302.6 mi) (in accordance with the WLTP), which is made possible by the battery and its net capacity of 85 kWh, is equally important. Its 800-volt technology enables fast DC charging with an output of up to 270 kW. The suspension is also based in the balance of dynamism and comfort, thanks to technologies such as Audi drive select, all-wheel steering, controlled damping, three-chamber air suspension, electric all-wheel drive, and the rear-axle differential lock. The wheel sizes range up to 21 inches, and the brake disks – which are available in carbon-fiber ceramic as an option – have a diameter of up to 420 millimeters (16.5 in).

Like all Audi models, the e-tron GT is connected extensively. The infotainment, the online services from Audi connect, and the assist systems are state-of-the-art. And since the dynamic work of art must also sound good, Audi has composed a unique sound for the e-tron GT. It sounds powerful and progressive – just as an Audi should.

  • Tackle tougher terrain: Fully redesigned F-150 Raptor boosts its off-road capability with all-new five-link rear suspension featuring improved wheel travel, electronically controlled next-generation FOX shocks with Live Valve technology, plus first-in-class* available 37-inch tires to tackle tougher terrain on high-speed desert runs
  • Most connected: Every F-150 Raptor comes with standard over-the-air updates and a new connected experience that can deliver potential features like shareable digital trail maps or other off-road technologies in the future; plus, there’s SYNC 4 with cloud-connected navigation and voice search and the FordPass mobile app to check on your truck remotely, control the truck’s lights from your hand and more
  • Best-performing: High-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine delivers better low-end torque, enables greater maximum towing and increased maximum payload capability, brings a projected EPA-estimated 500-mile-plus range, and class-exclusive* active valve dual exhaust for throatier engine sound; Raptor R is coming next year

04 February 2021, DUBAI, UAE Ford, America’s truck leader, created an off-road icon in 2009 when it introduced the desert racing-inspired F-150 Raptor. It was designed to not only speed over rough terrain, but also to jump and catch air.

And today, it’s born again with an all-new third-generation F-150 Raptor that takes the mechanical and technical brilliance and precision of Raptor and infuses it with enhanced connected technology that means the experience of owning one will only improve over time.

“Raptor is the original desert truck. We just took it to another level,” said Ali Jammoul, Ford Performance vehicle program director. “The all-new Raptor splices high-speed off-road performance muscle with advanced technology and connectivity that comes together in a unique Built Ford Tough way.”

F-150 Raptor has eclipsed the sales of other well-known performance icons. Over the last four years, the previous-generation Raptor cumulatively outsold Porsche’s entire lineup of sports cars and also outsold Chevrolet’s Corvette.

High-performance hardware

A high-performance off-road pickup is defined by its suspension, and the all-new F-150 Raptor debuts with completely redesigned running gear. It is reengineered with an all-new five-link rear suspension developed specifically for Raptor, designed to deliver more control and power to the ground with greater confidence over rough terrain at high speeds.

“Raptor is rooted in Baja 1000 racing, and its suspension advances our capability and performance – a five-link rear setup with more wheel travel than any Raptor before it,” said Carl Widmann, Ford Performance chief engineer. “And like a trophy truck, every aspect of Raptor has been engineered to deliver precision capability when your foot is flat on the floor, way out in the middle of nowhere roaring across the desert.”

The five-link rear suspension features extra-long trailing arms to better maintain axle position on rough terrain, a Panhard rod and 24-inch coil springs – the longest in the class*. The suspension design combined with more sophisticated engine management software means the truck can put more torque to the rear wheels for quicker starts off the line, faster acceleration and better throttle responsiveness while simultaneously delivering comfort, stability, handling, control and traction at speed.

Soaking up giant whoops and landings comes courtesy of next-generation FOX Live Valve internal bypass shocks with state-of-the-art electronic control technology offering position-sensitive damping adjustability. Raptor’s largest-ever shocks are designed to better resist heat buildup and to react even faster to terrain changes for greater confidence over extended desert running. The larger 3.1-inch-diameter anodized aluminum shock bodies are filled with all-new low-friction shock fluid specially designed to decrease frictional losses inside the damper for improved off and on-road comfort. New electronically controlled base valves are race-proven with an upgraded design enabling upward of 1,000 pounds of damping per corner at desert speeds.

Readings from suspension height sensors and other sensors around the truck change damping rates independently at each corner 500 times per second, with the shocks responding at the same speed the human brain processes visual information. The truck responds by the time the driver even registers a terrain change.

For the first time, Raptor is available with either 35-inch or 37-inch tires – the largest factory-fitted to a production light-duty full-size pickup. These specially designed BFGoodrich all-terrain T/A KO2 tires offer maximum traction and handling. Wearing 35-inch tires, Raptor clears 12-inch obstacles with an approach angle of 31 degrees, maximum departure angle of 23.9 degrees and breakover angle of 22.7 degrees. Raptor with 37-inch tires features 13.1 inches of running clearance, 33.1 degrees of approach angle, a maximum 24.9 degrees of departure angle and 24.4 degrees of breakover angle. Desert predators and rock crawlers alike will appreciate the outstanding wheel travel with 35-inch tires, reaching 14 inches at the front and 15 inches at the rear – 25 percent more travel than the first-generation Raptor.

Available in SuperCrew configuration on a 145-inch wheelbase, Raptor features a fully boxed high-strength steel frame with a high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy and composite body. The more capable suspension, stronger, taller shock towers and rear control arm mounting points serve to withstand punishing off-road use.

The all-new Raptor is equipped with a third-generation twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost high-output engine delivering torque low in the rev range right where it counts. It features state-of-the-art turbos and 10.5:1 compression ratio as well as new high-power fans built into the cooling system to ensure intense off-roading sessions never end too early. With its standard 36-gallon capacity, Raptor has a projected EPA-estimated range of more than 500 miles on a full tank of gasƗ.

Customers will appreciate the added productivity provided by class-exclusive* Pro Power Onboard, giving them the ability to use their truck as a mobile generator. Raptor can be ordered with an available 2.0 kilowatts of exportable output to run power tools, camp lights and other equipment, providing more exportable power than any light-duty full-size pickup competitor.

A new three-inch equal-length exhaust system features a patent-pending built-in X-pipe, unique “trombone loop” and first-for-Raptor active valves. The system takes advantage of a true pass-through muffler design that improves sound quality. Customers can configure four sound level modes – Quiet, Normal, Sport and Baja.

The Ford-built 10-speed automatic transmission upgraded with next-generation controls is bolted to an innovative torque-on-demand transfer case. Standard electronic locking rear differentials and available Torsen front limited-slip differential are fitted with 4:10 final drive ratios. Maximum payload increases by 200 pounds, to 1,400 pounds, while maximum towing also increases 200 pounds, to 8,200 pounds of conventional towing.

Tech for off-road or on

Over-the-air updates offer the potential for an even smarter Raptor with more capabilities in the future; possible upgrades like trail maps plus Trail Turn Assist could add even more off-road capability. Customers can control their Raptor with FordPass – a mobile app that can lock or unlock their vehicle from almost anywhere, check tire pressure and fuel level, and allow control of new truck-focused features like Zone Lighting, Trailer Theft Alert, Trailer Light Check and available Pro Power Onboard. Over-the-air updates could evolve FordPass to include unique functionality for trips into the wild.

The Terrain Management System’s seven selectable drive modes allow customers to choose the setting best suited to driving conditions, including Slippery, Tow/Haul, Sport, Normal, Off-Road, Baja and Rock Crawl. teering feel, transfer case behavior, stability control, active valve exhaust, active damping system, throttle mapping and transmission shift points, as well as the display on the digital gauge cluster.

The available 360-degree camera package provides an in-cabin view of obstacles around the truck, with the front view offering a real-time tire track overlay to dynamically show the path of the wheels ahead to reduce the need to stop for spotter guidance. A convenient dash-mounted hard button calls up the 360-degree view and rearview cameras.

Standard Trail 1-Pedal Drive** helps make extreme off-road driving like rock crawling easier. In harsh trail situations, a driver typically must use both pedals, modulating throttle and brake simultaneously to advance the truck. Trail 1-Pedal Drive simplifies all that, combining those operations into activating just the throttle – press to move forward, release to brake. The truck applies the brakes proportionally as the driver lifts from the accelerator.

F-150 Raptor also comes with standard Trail Control, which operates like cruise control for off-road use. Drivers simply select a set speed and the truck manages throttle and braking to allow them to focus on steering through challenging off-road conditions.

Standard SYNC 4 includes more natural voice control as well as real-time mapping and customizable information on demand. Customers can wirelessly connect smartphones without a USB cord for seamless integration of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility, as well as SYNC AppLink apps like Ford+Alexa. The soundtrack to every adventure is provided by an available 18-speaker B&O Unleashed sound system by Bang & Olufsen.

Aggressiveness inspired by a fighter jet
A rugged, aggressive exterior advances the signature design of F-150 Raptor. Completely redesigned, the distinctive front emphasizes the truck’s width with a machine-tough look featuring a power dome hood with blacked-out grille and headlights that stretch fender to fender.

The hood has a new heat extractor and functional side vents at the top trailing edge of the fender, all inspired by the intakes of the F-22 Raptor fighter jet. Aggressive front fenders emulate the windswept look of dust billowing off the top of the tires at high speed. The same concept extends to the rear, with blacked-out taillights and available tailgate appliqué creating visual fender-to-fender width.

A wider front skid plate offers greater coverage side-to-side and extends protection forward. Durable steel front and rear bumpers are built for the rigors of off-roading, with the rear bumper retaining the high-clearance design that tucks the dual exhaust tips high up against the truck.

Available Rigid off-road lighting mounted in the front bumper helps drivers illuminate even the darkest night. Three different 17-inch wheels are available, two with beadlock capability – all designed for maximum strength and great looks.

The 2021 F-150 Raptor will be assembled at Ford’s Dearborn Truck Plant in Dearborn, Michigan, and available in showrooms this summer. Raptor R is coming next year.

* Class is full-size pickups under 8,500 pounds GVWR.

** Trail 1-Pedal Drive is an extra driving aid. It does not replace the driver’s attention and judgment, or the need to apply the brakes. See owner’s manual for details and limitations.

Jeep 80th Anniversary heralds Special Editions And Middle East-Bound Hybrids

– Press Release –

Jeep celebrates 80 years of history and innovation

  • Jeep® celebrates 80th birthday in 2021
  • Milestone to be marked with introduction of new ’80th Anniversary‘ special-edition models, available on the Renegade, Compass, Wrangler and Gladiator.
  • Preview of New Compass: completely renewed with a refreshed design and high-tech features, it will be soon available for order in Italy and Germany.
  • Brand innovation will continue with Jeep Wave – the new loyalty program, providing customers with exclusive services and special benefits.
  • The latest innovations are making Jeep a leader in technologies for a more sustainable future.

28 January 2021, Dubai, UAE – 2021 is a special year for Jeep as the brand marks its 80th birthday with a celebration of eight decades of 4×4 leadership, open-air freedom and adventure.

The Jeep legend began in 1941 with the fabled Willys MB – the first ever mass-produced 4×4 vehicle – and grew over the decades with the constant launch of new products building an enduring reputation that has seen the brand become synonymous with off-road excellence.

But constant innovation have seen the legend evolve, with comfort, handling and connectivity now every bit as much of the Jeep DNA as its off-road prowess.

Now, as the Jeep brand celebrates its eighth decade, it is entering the next exciting phase in its history; embracing the future with the ambition to become a leader in sustainable mobility technologies. This is the mission of a brand strongly rooted in tradition, yet one with the ability to evolve constantly to meet new customer targets and the environmental issues of the imminent future.

This, of course, involves electrification and the brand entered a new era with the launch of its first plug-in hybrid models in the EMEA region – the new Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe – in 2020.

As the first two vehicles to carry the 4xe badge, Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe are Jeep’s take on electrification and offer zero-emission mobility, when driving in full electric mode. This has been coupled with the all-terrain safety of the Jeep eAWD system that activates when needed to provide the best possible balance between efficiency, driving fun and attention to the environment. Since their launch in September, 4xe models have generated huge interest, with 10,500 orders placed. In fact, the new models have proved so successful that, in the last three months of 2020, one in every five Jeep vehicles purchased in Europe was a 4xe.

The 80th anniversary celebrations will play out across through the whole of 2021, with dedicated events created to bring customers and enthusiasts closer to the brand and its heritage. The first event took place today with a web conference, where Antonella Bruno, Head of Jeep Brand EMEA, unveiled the new ’80th Anniversary‘ special-edition models. Not only do these models pay tribute to the brand’s 80-year history, they also continue the long-established tradition, started in 1966, of producing special-edition models to mark special anniversaries or achievements.

Jeep Compass 80th Anniversary Edition

New ’80th Anniversary‘ special-edition models

The star of 2021 will be the ’80th Anniversary‘ special series, the celebratory limited-edition models available on Renegade, Compass, Wrangler and Gladiator. Each ‘80th Anniversary‘ model is based on the best-selling variant, and offers standard  safety and technology features alongside aesthetic flourishes that make them truly unique.

The first Jeep ’80th Anniversary‘ model to debut is the Renegade, which is already available at Jeep dealerships across Europe. Compass, Wrangler and Gladiator ’80th Anniversary‘ will arrive in spring.

Although there are many differences between these Jeep SUVs in terms of size and character, they all share an unmistakable look, courtesy of specific design cues, including ’80th Anniversary‘ badging enriched by low-gloss Granite Crystal accents; diamond-pattern cloth seats with tungsten stitching and ’80th Anniversary‘ logo; interior high-gloss black accents and logo tag on seats and mats. Dedicated alloy wheels complete the exterior look of the new commemorative models.

Powered by internal combustion engines and Jeep plug-in hybrid systems, they will also be packed full of advanced technology and safety features, as all of which enhances Jeep’s unparalleled 4×4 capability.

New high-tech content includes 8.4- to 10.1-inch touchscreens, DAB radio and navigation with smartphone integration and Uconnect services, full LED pack and new ’Since 1941‘ infotainment system screen.

The ’80th Anniversary‘ special edition will also be the first version of New Compass to debut in the European market, ahead of the official launch of the new model with a dedicated event later this year. In the last few days, production of the New Compass for the European market commenced at the FCA plant in Melfi (Italy), while orders will soon open in Italy and Germany – first markets to introduce the new model in the region.

A year of exclusive events and services for all members of the Jeep family

This year’s product news will be accompanied by special communications initiatives and dedicated events, to bring even more customers and enthusiasts closer to the Jeep tradition.

One such initiative is Jeep Wave, the new programme offering Jeep owners exclusive services and a special benefits to enhance their sense of belonging to the community at the heart of the Jeep experience around the world. Jeep Wave will be offered from January on the ’80th Anniversary‘ special series and all 2021-purchased or leased Jeep vehicles. It is marked out by a logo inspired by the traditional greeting of Jeep owners  – a raised hand waving, or two or four fingers extended upward from the steering wheel. This gesture of friendship is part of Jeep history, and all ‘Jeepers’ are pleased to uphold this tradition.

The main benefits of Jeep Wave include: the first two scheduled vehicle services (within 24 months of the purchase), thanks to the ’EASY CARE‘ two-year maintenance programme, a 24/7 roadside assistance service, a Priority Customer Service provided by a dedicated, multi-lingual Jeep  Call Center and privileged entry to brand events and partnerships.  The new Jeep Wave program has already been launched in the main European markets and all the others will follow in the coming months.

80 years of innovations, now making the brand a leader in a more sustainable future

Of course, there have been many changes since 1941, but the way Jeep conceives its vehicles – and how most owners live them everyday – have been constants. This has created the global perception of Jeep as a symbol of freedom, adventure, authenticity and passion.

Just think back to the 1941 Willys MB, followed in 1949 by the four-wheel drive Willys Wagon, that kicked off the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) category, and the ‘invention’ of the ‘Premium’ SUV with the Wagoneer in 1963. In its eight decades of history, Jeep has always been a pioneer of new segments and new technologies. It is now ready to write a new page in its long history with the new Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe models.

These pioneers will be soon joined by the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid – the most technologically advanced and capable Wrangler ever – unveiled last September in Detroit (USA). Among other epic journeys, the new model has recently managed to complete – in full-electric mode – the Rubicon Trail on the Sierra Nevada mountain range, one of the world’s most challenging off-road tails and the terrain Jeep has long used to test and improve the off-road capability of its SUVs.

Jeep Renegade “80th Anniversary”

The exterior of the new Jeep Renegade “80th Anniversary” features a distinctive styling with low gloss Granite Crystal accents on the vehicle’s iconic seven-slot front grille, 18-inch alloy wheels and exclusive 80th Anniversary commemorative badge.

Both petrol options are fitted with front-wheel drive.

A 4-cylinder 1.3-litre turbo engine with plug-in hybrid technology, delivering 190 hp and 270 Nm of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and eAWD completes the engine offer on the Renegade 80th Anniversary special-edition model, which is already available at Jeep dealerships across Europe.

Renegade MY 2021 range

The introduction of the 80th Anniversary series follows the market launch of the Renegade model year 2021,

which features a revised internal combustion engine range, updated to enhance the performance of the front-wheel drive versions and meet Euro 6D Final standards.

For 2021, the Renegade is available with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines, four trim levels (Longitude, Limited, S and Trailhawk) as well as the new 80th Anniversary special-edition model.

To enhance the peculiar flair for personalisation of the Jeep compact SUV, a choice of 7 specific wheels and 18 different color configurations are available on the 2021 model year also in combination with black roof.

CELEBRATING 70: JAGUAR C-TYPE JOINS CLASSIC CONTINUATION FAMILY

  • Jaguar Classic is celebrating 70 years of the C-type by creating a strictly limited number of new hand-built examples of the legendary 1950s sports racer
  • Fully-authentic new disc-braked Jaguar C-types will be built by Jaguar Classic experts at the world-class Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works facility in Coventry, UK
  • Continuation programme will allow Jaguar customers to purchase a new factory-built example of the ultimate 1953 Le Mans 24 Hours-winning C-type for the first time
  • New online configurator brings 3D CAD engineering data to life, allowing prospective customers to specify their perfect C-type virtually
  • For regular updates from Jaguar Classic, including the progress of the new C-types

28 January 2021, Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Jaguar Classic is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the legendary C-type sports racer by creating a strictly limited production run of new C-type Continuation cars, which will be hand built at Jaguar’s world-class Classic Works facility in Coventry.

The C-type Continuation programme will allow historic motor racing enthusiasts to purchase a new factory-built example of the ultimate 1953 disc-braked ‘works’
C-type direct from Jaguar for the first time.

The C-type, which was originally made between 1951-53, was famed for its exceptionally fluid shape by Jaguar Cars designer, aerodynamicist and artist Malcolm Sayer. The C-type won the gruelling Le Mans 24 Hours on its debut in 1951, scoring the first of Jaguar’s seven outright wins at the French endurance race.

From 1952, the C-type pioneered the adoption of innovative disc brake technology in motorsport, with a revolutionary system developed by Jaguar and Dunlop scoring the first win for a disc-braked car with Stirling Moss at the Reims Grand Prix in France and contesting the 1000-mile Mille Miglia in Italy.

The C-type won the Le Mans 24 Hours again in 1953, another first for disc brakes, and also enjoyed success in the hands of private owners, which contributed to Jaguar finishing vice-champion in the inaugural World Sportscar Championship.

Dan Pink, Director, Jaguar Classic, said: “Driven by some of the most-admired racing drivers in history, the C-type laid the foundations for Jaguar’s success in endurance racing and is synonymous with design and engineering innovation. Seventy years on, Jaguar Classic is proud to be able to utilise the latest innovations in manufacturing technology – alongside traditional skills and unrivalled expertise – to reintroduce this legendary car for a new generation of enthusiasts to enjoy.”

Of the 53 Jaguar C-types built in the 1950s, 43 were sold to private owners, but the production C-type specification was limited to drum-braked cars with twin SU carburettors and 200bhp, in the style of the 1951 works cars.

Eight new C-type Continuation cars will be built ahead of a racing-inspired celebration event for their owners in 2022. Each example will reflect the 1953 Le Mans-winning works team car specification, including 3.4-litre straight-six engine with triple Weber 40DCO3 carburettors for 220bhp and disc brakes.

Building on the experience gained with previous Jaguar Classic Continuation programmes for Lightweight E-type, XKSS and D-type, Jaguar Classic engineers have consulted Jaguar’s archives and cross-referenced scan data taken from an original C-type in conjunction with the latest computer aided design technology to create the most authentic new C-type possible.

Exclusive access to original engineering drawings and company records created by the original C-type development team – including Malcolm Sayer, competitions manager Lofty England, and engineers William Heynes, Bob Knight and Norman Dewis – ensure the authentic 1953 specifications are accurately maintained.

Taking that engineering CAD data a stage further, for the first time ever Jaguar Classic is also able to give customers the opportunity to visualise their C-type Continuation virtually using a specially designed online configurator. This new tool allows users to compare colour and trim options from the 12 authentic exterior colours and eight interior colours available, and apply optional racing roundels, steering wheel badge and bonnet badging.

Additional options available to C-type Continuation customers include an FIA-approved Harness Retention System or rollover protection. Not just for show, these authentic new C-types will be eligible for historic racing, track and closed-road use.

MG Breaks Into Top Ten GCC Car Brands

– Press Release –

MG smashes sales records in 2020 to enter the GCC top ten of car manufacturers for the first time

  • MG sales up by a remarkable 72 per cent to 27,595 units
  • British-born car brand registered sales growth in all of its regional markets
  • MG’s biggest market, Saudi Arabia saw sales rise by 89 percent to take a 4.2 percent market share
  • Compact sedans and subcompact crossover SUVs prove most popular among MG customers in the region

26 January 2021, Dubai, UAE – MG Motor broke into the GCC’s top ten of car manufacturers for the first time in 2020, during a year in which the British-born brand’s sales increased by a remarkable 72 percent across the region. With total sales of 27,595 units, the company’s achievements were all the more impressive considering the challenging market conditions caused by the global pandemic.

This success has been driven by the brand’s line-up of sedan and SUV models, and in particular its top two sellers, the MG5 compact sedan and MG ZS compact SUV.

The year saw MG launch operations in several new regional markets, including Jordan and Iraq, but it is in Saudi Arabia that customers have most evidently taken to the British brand. MG is now the 8th biggest-selling car brand in the Kingdom, which reinforced its position as MG’s biggest market in the Middle East, just three years after the brand was reintroduced to the country. MG now enjoys a 4.2 percent market share in Saudi Arabia, with total sales up by 89 percent in 2020.

Core to MG’s popularity has been the quality and breadth of its model line-up, which has been completely refreshed over recent years. The brand’s biggest sellers were its compact sedan models, the MG 5, which accounted for a third of all 2020 sales. The stylish MG6 sedan continued to prove popular, with year-on-year sales up by 15 percent.

MG’s mid-size SUV models, consisting of the MG ZS, MG HS and MG RX5, totalled 39 percent of the total figure. Meanwhile the brand’s first seven-seater SUV, the RX8, shifted 12 percent contribution in its first full year of overall sales.

MG Middle East Managing Director Tom Lee

Tom Lee, Managing Director of MG Motor’s Middle East operations, commented: “Even before the current pandemic, we had set ourselves an ambitious goal to break into the top 10 of manufacturers by the end of 2020, so we are delighted to have achieved this despite the challenges we have all faced. It clearly demonstrates the growing awareness, understanding and popularity of the brand among Middle East car buyers.

“We are keen to continue to provide our customers with a fantastic range of high-quality cars, and we are focused on ensuring our customers get the highest service levels from the exceptional list of local partners we have,” Lee continued. “Currently we have 33 exclusive retail showrooms and 33 service centres across the region, and we are looking at expanding further in 2021. This has been supplemented by the introduction of our new e-commerce service to offer our customers the best possible virtual shopping experience.”

The brand has not only experienced success in the Middle East and Levant countries, but equally around the world. In 2020 the brand increased its market share in its birthplace, the United Kingdom, as well as the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, France, Australia, and South America, whilst increasing overseas production in North-East Asia.

In the face of market adjustments and the industrial transformation, and in keeping with its promise to deliver innovation and practicality in all of its cars, MG is set to introduce MG HS and MG 6 (PHEV) plug-in hybrid cars as well as intelligent connectivity and 5G in the MG HS PHEV.

Furthermore, MG will continue to enhance its services as it tends to its customer’s needs, while its 6 years / 200,000 km warranty on all models, combined with exceptional offers available to new and current customers, will ensure peace of mind in difficult times.

Last Rites For Lotus’ Lusty, Lightweight Line-Up

– Press Release –

A New Year and a New Future:

New Lotus sports car series confirmed

Elise, Exige and Evora embark on final year of production

  • New series sports car production confirmed for Hethel, UK
  • £100m+ investment into all-new manufacturing facilities
  • Further job creation to support increased volumes
  • End of production planned for Evora, Exige and Elise in 2021

25 January 2021, Hethel, UK – A new series of sports cars is confirmed, with prototype production of the Lotus Type 131 to commence this year from a world-class manufacturing facility in Hethel, Norfolk.

The new manufacturing investment is part of Lotus’ Vision80 strategy, which will also see the relocation of two Lotus sub-assembly facilities into one efficient central operation in Norwich city to support higher volumes.

Lotus Elise 220 Sport

To accompany the £100-million-plus investment into Hethel’s facilities, Lotus will be recruiting some 250 new employees. This is in addition to the 670 to have joined Lotus since September 2017, when shareholders Geely and Etika took ownership of the company.

New recruits are required for roles in engineering and manufacturing for both Lotus Cars and the world-renowned engineering consultancy, Lotus Engineering – which opens its Advanced Technology Centre in Warwick later this year.

To acknowledge the forthcoming family of performance cars, Lotus has released an image that hints at the new generation of products that will follow Elise, Exige and Evora, which have entered their final year of production in 2021.  A full programme of activities is planned to celebrate the current range of three sports cars, starting with the elder, the iconic Lotus Elise.

The Lotus Elise was unveiled in 1995, revolutionising the low volume sports car industry with its pioneering use of extruded and bonded aluminium, high-tech composites and lightweight knowhow.

Lotus Exige 350 Sport

Using the technology pioneered in the Elise, the Exige, launched in 2000, quickly became the epitome of the ‘race car for the road’.  The Exige demonstrated a rare ability to give the driver an involving yet accessible experience on the road, while still managing to lap the most demanding tracks of the world quickly, with the safety and progressiveness expected of a Lotus.

The Evora, unveiled in 2008, returned Lotus to the lucrative super-sports car sector as an award-winning and versatile road car that was more driver-focused than its peers. In motorsport, the Evora was successful too, winning national GT championships around the world and gaining a podium at Le Mans.

Future Lotus cars are taking this learning and further developing it to ensure the preservation of that all-important DNA, with the overriding criteria of being ‘For The Drivers’.

Phil Popham, CEO, Lotus Cars, said: “This year will be hugely significant for Lotus with new facilities coming on stream, a new sports car entering production and new levels of efficiency and quality that only a new car design and factory can deliver. Despite the continuing global challenges, Lotus has emerged from 2020 strong and on track in the delivery of our Vision80 business plan.”

He added: “As our Vision80 strategy illustrates, Lotus is all about looking forward, and our future is full of continuous innovation. In 2021, however, we will be reflecting on the legacy of our current range, starting with the Elise, a sports car that genuinely revolutionised the automotive industry, not only because it is a legend-in-its-own-lifetime but also for its impact on car design and technology.”

Matt Windle, Lotus’ Executive Director, Engineering, said: “Our renowned team of engineers, designers and technicians who are working on the new cars are acutely aware of the legacy from the Elise, Exige and Evora.  Indeed, many were around when Elise was being developed. Members of our team, old and new, are now busy blending the learnings of the past with the innovations of today and tomorrow, to ensure our future cars truly move the game on but remain firmly committed to Lotus values.”

The Elise, Exige and Evora have contributed greatly to the Lotus business over the years, and by the time the last of these models leaves the assembly line, they will have sold a combined circa 55,000 units.

Lotus has created multiple automotive legends over the last 73 years, and with the Evija hypercar and new Type 131 sports car, a new dawn of innovation and legend-making is breaking over Hethel.
